Volcano Land
We created a board game that included chemical reactions. We used a single displacement reaction as a temporary shortcut with an LED. Another reaction was a gas producing reaction to show a volcano erupting in the game. Our third reaction was a double replacement reaction that represented the gold that the winner wins by finishing first.
Players race to the finish, using temporary shortcuts, to erupt the volcano and win the gold. Players use dice to move around the board.
Chemical Reactions
Our first reaction is a single displacement reaction. The reaction causes aluminum to degrade, which is shown by the lighting of an LED light when the aluminum strip breaks.
Al + ZnNO3 → AlNO3 +Z
Aluminum + Zinc Nitrate yields Aluminum Nitrate + Zinc |
Our gas producing reaction causes a balloon to inflate which tilts a lever to begin our third reaction. It is set off when vinegar from the balloon is poured into a beaker with baking soda in it.
NaHCO3+CH3COOH → CO2 + H2O + Na+ + CH3COO
Baking Soda + Vinegar yields Carbon Dioxide + Water + Sodium Ions + Acetate Ions |
This double displacement reaction begins after the gas producing reaction. Potassium Iodate is tilted into lead nitrate from a lever which results in the formation of a yellow colored liquid.
KI + Pb(NO3)2 → K(NO3)2 + PbI
Potassium Iodate and Lead Nitrate yields Potassium Nitrate and Lead Iodate |
Concepts
Reactants- The initial substance or substances before the reaction occurs
Products- The new substance or substances formed after the reaction
Law of Conservation of Mass- A law that states that a reaction only changes the arrangement of atoms and that the mass of the reactants and products must be equal
Aqueous- One of the phases of a substance, meaning dissolved in water. The other phases are physical states (liquid, solid, gas)
Synthesis Reaction- Multiple substances combine into one product
Decomposition Reaction- One reactant is separated into multiple substances
Single Displacement Reaction- One switch of reactive ions occurs from one aqueous substance and one nonaqueous substance which yield a new aqueous substance and another nonaqueous substance. We have this reaction to signify a shortcut in our game.
Double Displacement Reaction- Two switches of reactive ions from aqueous substances occur forming a new aqueous substance and a new liquid, gas, or solid (precipitate) substance. This reaction creates a yellow color in our game.
Combustion of a Hydrocarbon- When a hydrocarbon and oxygen yield carbon dioxide and water. This reaction produces heat (exothermic)
.
Gas Producing Reaction- A reaction that produces a gas. In our game, we use baking soda and vinegar which yield carbon dioxide and water and other ions
Endothermic- A type of reaction where heat is used to cause the reaction
Exothermic- A type of reaction where heat is produced by the reaction

Reflection
This project was great. Our team was time efficient and worked well together. The physical building of our project allowed me to get more comfortable with tools. I also learned some artistic concepts from my team members as we made the board. I found that I need to focus on being more open to my team mate's creative ideas. When we were designing the board game, I was stubborn and wanted my ideas included instead of others. Next project, I will be more flexible when we design the project. Also, I need to work on my presentation skills. I think I'm too used to presenting with powerpoint. I will make sure to improve on my speaking skills when presenting. I look forward to improving my next project.
